Elements and Modalities in Your Birth Chart

If someone asks what your sign is, you probably answer with your sun sign, and that's fine for small talk. But your sun sign is only one placement out of ten in your birth chart. The moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the rest are all sitting in signs too, and each of those signs belongs to an element and a modality. Once you add all of that up, you get a picture of your personality that's far more textured than "I'm a Leo." What the 4 elements are

Fire signs — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius — tend to act first and think later. They bring energy, initiative, and enthusiasm, and they get restless when things move too slowly.

Why your sun sign alone isn't enough

Your sun might be in fire, but your moon could be in water, your Mercury in air, and your Venus in earth. That's not a contradiction — it's the normal state of things.

This is why two people can share a sun sign and still feel like completely different personalities. One Leo might have a chart loaded with earth and fixed signs, coming across as steady and reserved. Another Leo might have most of their planets in air and cardinal signs, coming across as chatty and quick to start new things. The sun sign is the headline, but the distribution of all ten planets across the elements and modalities is the actual story.
